SOUTH LUANGWA PARK, ZAMBIA
This day as a lot of other days started early. The plan was to leave the camp at 6, but the people that supposed to pick us up were late – 40 minutes. So when we waited for the guys eating breakfast we got some monkey company. They were jumping and swinging in the tree above us trying to find a way to steal our food. A little funny thing was that some people sat under the tree and at one time the monkeys actually peed on them – poor people.. 😝
After 40 minutes waiting they finally came and it was time to jump into the 4WD cars. Because we were at another camp we needed to drive a little longer to the South Luangwa Park. After about 20 minutes we arrived and got greeted by a lot of monkeys. They didn’t really mind the car which was perfect for us 😁 Don’t think we got too far before we saw our first elephants, just standing by the side of the road. We stopped the car to take photos and when we were done it was time to go. The driver turned on the engine and was about to set the first gear, but he couldn’t do it. We were stranded and the two elephants was about 10 meters in front of us. They looked at us while the driver was trying to push into the first gear. Quite exposed because the car didn’t have any doors or windows. But after a while it worked! … For about 50m and then it broke down completely. The other car took another way so we were completely alone. No animals though. After a little while they caught up with us with a big smile and said that they saw a leopard. Couldn’t say that we were very happy. When we have stand there for a while (while they tried to fix the car), we decided to swop people just so we could see the leopard before it disappeared. They are rare to see and is also one of the big five – so you don’t want to miss that! We went back with the other car, and sure enough, we saw the leopard! It was just sleeping and didn’t mind us coming by with the car 😴🐆😁
When we came back they still haven’t manage to fix the car, even though we tried to push it. They decided to call for another car. The people on our car thought that the other car should go and not waste time with our broke down car. They also earged Tobias and I to jump into the other car because we never been on a safari before and they wanted us to see as much as possible. So nice of them 🥰 After the car broke down again we jumped to the next car. Got the best seat in the front 😎
First thing we saw was a pack of zebras and impalas.
Later we drove for a while and saw both a bunch of hippos and also crocodiles.
After a little more driving we saw some monkeys and elephants in the distance.
Then some more driving until we came quite up close with two grown up elephants and two babies. They just stood there and ate. When we passed them after we made a turn, one of the baby elephants wanted to show how dangerous it was, so it stretched its ears and did a small ”toot”, super cute 🐘
We then drove maybe 100m to get away from the elephants I guess, and made a stop. We could stretch our legs, get cold drinks and snack. Now it was super warm and sunny, so a cold drink was perfect! I went away to pee and when I was coming back a warthog just casually strolled passed me no care in the world – a typical Pumba 🐗 I also saw some kind of mix of a squirrel and a meercat, don’t know what it was ^^
When we were done Tobias and I swapped back to the first car and off we went! After some time we met two elephants on the road refusing to move. They just stood there and looked at us. Then one of them just peed and it was then we realised it was two males – haha 😆
We were driving along and saw a lot of different animals, but no giraffes or lions.. We were though very lucky to see wild dogs which you almost never see The game drive should take 4h but ended up around 5h. As I said we saw a lot of animals during the whole trip so we were quite happy 🙂
Because we were a little more than 1.5 hours behind schedule we needed quickly to pack our tents and eat lunch. We had a long drive to our next camp site, so it was dark when we arrived. It also rained and thundered so we decided to upgrade. Best decision! Even though it wasn’t the cheapest, but sleep in a good bed and an own shower is always nice 😛
